‘Nishi’, first Bangladeshi film to win EMA Award, set for Bangladesh premiere

"Nishi", the first Bangladeshi film to win the prestigious Environmental Media Association (EMA) Award in the United States, is set for its Bangladesh premiere next week. According to production house International Academy of Film and Media, the film will be screened on December 6 at 3pm at the German Cultural Centre in Dhaka as part of the European Film Festival.

Based on a story and screenplay by Golam Rabbany, the film is jointly directed by Rabbany and Zahirul Islam.

Speaking about the premiere, director Rabbany said, "The film has travelled to many countries and will continue to do so. It has earned recognition and may receive more. But the joy of showing it to Bangladeshi audiences is incomparable. Many had asked to see it personally, and this premiere finally makes that possible."

Co-produced by the European Union Bangladesh, Green Film School Alliance and UNESCO Dhaka, "Nishi" follows the story of a tea worker's daughter whose education is halted due to a severe water crisis. A timber trader named Lalchan attempts to coerce the underage girl, Nishi, into marriage by promising to install a tube-well at her home.
