EMA Ends 2021 With a Message of Climate Hope

EMA at COP26:
A Message from EMA CEO Debbie Levin

It was my great honor to attend COP26 this year in Glasgow, Scotland, and so fortunate to travel with an incredible, brilliant team of Climate Physicians! I literally was hanging out for a week with Climate Doctors. What a gift. EMA Board Member and EMA’s long-time medical guru and pioneer in this urgent sub-specialty of Climate Medicine, Dr. Jay Lemery, has taught us so much about the (obvious but not always addressed) connection between our environment and our health.

Thank you to the Climate & Health Foundation and the University of Colorado School of Medicine for sharing your brilliant minds with EMA.

Finally, I'd like to wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season and a wonderful New Year!

EMA Executive Board Member Dr. Jay Lemery: Climate Health Gets Top Billing at COP26

For those that attended EMA’s 2021 Impact Summit, you’ll know that the conversation on climate change is increasingly becoming one of the long-term health of our communities and families. Shortness of breath from wildfire smoke; heat stress from extreme temperatures; water insecurity from downpours and floods; proliferation of mosquito-borne disease, and stress from forced displacement all read like an emergency department triage list.

Seeking to advance the mission of EMA and learn more on this critical topic, EMA CEO Debbie Levin joined the teams from the University of Colorado Climate & Health Program (including myself) and the Climate and Health Foundation at the COP26 summit in Glasgow, Scotland.

This year was billed to be a breakthrough year in global agreements to combat greenhouse gas emissions and was the first time that climate and health issues received top billing. The team members attended the World Health Organization’s Heath Summit, which featured talks from WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Former Australian Prime Minister and newly appointed Chair of the Wellcome Trust, Julia Gillard, and HHS Assistant Secretary for Health, Dr. Rachel Levine.

EMA, the CU Climate and Health Program, and the Climate and Health Foundation hosted a weekend gathering for #ClimateMedicine, and featured visits from White House National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy and Chief Scientist for The Nature Conservancy, Dr. Katherine Hayhoe.

EMA has been active in amplifying the voices of the newly emerging Climate Doctors and hosts a Climate Medicine series through the EMA Talks platform. The popularity of this topic—as evidenced by the robust conversations at the 2021 Impact Summit—will return to EMA in 2022 as a dedicated health platform at future EMA events featuring experts in climate & health from around the world.

Back on the Green Carpet: Celebrating Excellence in Environmental Storytelling at the 2021 EMA Awards

The EMA Awards are back in-person! After going virtual in 2020, it felt incredible to hit the green carpet again to celebrate excellence in environmental storytelling. And thankfully, we had plenty to celebrate in 2021. Between our outstanding winners and nominees and recognizing 229 EMA Green Seal Recipients, it was clear that Hollywood is more eager and willing than ever to help our planet.

Our host, Jeff Goldblum, led the evening with his unparalleled wit and humor, sharing memories of his dear friend and EMA Lifetime Achievement Recipient long-time EMA Board Member Ed Begley Jr. And a special thank you to the very funny EMA Board Members Malin Akerman & Jack Donnelly for the surprise host "assist."  Further, we were more than thrilled to honor The Hip Hop Caucus with our EMA Global Justice Award and Karla Welch & Sasha Markova with our EMA Innovator Award. Also, a huge thank you to EMA Executive Board Member Angus Mitchell for hosting the event at the incredible Gearbox LA. You can relive the excitement of the 2021 EMA Awards at the link below.

Leading With Solutions at the 2021 EMA IMPACT Summit

It doesn't take more than a Google search or turning on the news to know that we face unprecedented environmental issues. But what's not always front and center are the solutions that will help solve these problems. That's why we started our annual EMA IMPACT Summit in 2017, to acknowledge the issues but lead with solutions. After a hiatus in 2020 due to the pandemic, it was invigorating to be back at IMPACT with activists, scientists, business leaders, and artists connected by the belief that we can save our planet.

Now, we want to communicate these solutions with the public. So we'll be sharing weekly videos from IMPACT on our social channels to help inspire more people to take action. Finally, we want to thank all of our moderators, panelists, and attendees, and a huge thank you to Pendry West Hollywood for hosting the 2021 EMA IMPACT Summit—the perfect green venue for our event.
