Promoting Sustainability through Authenticity with Mercedes Blanche

Although EMA primarily focuses on sustainability in film production, its endorsement of environmentalism extends far beyond the scope of entertainment. This is because promoting sustainable practices inherently includes responsible use of natural resources, species conservation, and pollution reduction. Through EMA, we hope to foster a sense of shared responsibility for the environment within all people. In doing so, we are always grateful for the opportunity to speak with individuals in the film industry who share our passion.

As an actress, content creator, and author, Mercedes Blanche discusses that animal welfare is integral to environmental stewardship. Mercedes has built her brand around authenticity in entertainment, and we enjoyed learning more about her aspirations and alignment with EMA. It was a pleasure to speak with her about this critical issue.

What is the origin story of your environmental work, specifically with animal rights?

My passion for animal rights began in my youth, deeply influenced by my upbringing in Hungary and my love for animals. This commitment has grown, leading me to collaborate with organizations like PETA to promote animal adoption and welfare. I believe in using my platform to advocate for those without a voice, ensuring animals receive the care and respect they deserve.

How did you initially learn about EMA, and what appeals to you most about our work?

I became aware of the Environmental Media Association (EMA) through its influential presence in the entertainment industry (and online on social media), particularly its efforts to merge environmental advocacy with media. What resonates with me is EMA's dedication to promoting sustainable practices in film and television, aligning perfectly with my mission to foster authenticity and responsibility in media productions. As an upcoming actor/producer, I feel it is my responsibility as a collective to highlight, advocate, and spread awareness, especially nowadays.

Some of your work, including your recent book, delves into the realities hidden behind social media. How does EMA align with your mission to increase authenticity in film and media?

In my book, Social Media is Bulls*it, I explore the discrepancies between online personas and reality. EMA's commitment to transparency and sustainability in media aligns with my advocacy for authenticity. By encouraging environmentally responsible storytelling, EMA helps dismantle false narratives and promotes genuine content that reflects real-world issues and solutions.

Which of your environmental social media campaigns have been most successful?

Collaborating with PETA to promote animal adoption stands out as a significant campaign. By leveraging my social media platforms, we raised awareness about the importance of adopting animals from shelters, resulting in increased adoption rates and heightened public discourse on animal welfare. I have been working with local/non-local/outside of US organizations to help their adaptation processes. I support many of them financially, physically, and how could I be a face of adaptation campaigns if I don’t adopt as well? I have five adopted pets, and it keeps growing.

What sustainable or animal-related causes are most important to you, and why?

Animal welfare remains at the forefront of my advocacy. Ensuring animals are treated with compassion and respect is crucial. Additionally, I support sustainable fashion initiatives that aim to reduce environmental impact and promote ethical production practices, believing that our choices in consumption directly affect the planet and its inhabitants.

Do you have any sustainable projects coming up that you can share?

I am working on a few projects now. Hopefully, I will be able to share more in the summer! However, I am very excited, and I believe we can make a difference collectively.
