Earlier this year, EMA announced the launch of a Gen Z-led activist board that’s seeing its members help the industry better understand the concerns of younger audiences. They’re not just looking for carbon offsets or the removal of single-use plastic behind the scenes — although they want that, too. They’re keen on seeing forward-facing narratives happen in productions as well as seeing celebrities walking the red carpets in sustainable designs and talking more openly about their choices.

For over two decades, The Environmental Media Association has been on a mission to bring the planet’s most pressing environmental issues to the forefront of pop culture and to inspire the next generation of change-makers.

Earlier in October, the association celebrated the artists and storytellers leading the way in environmental messaging in the media.

Don’t Look Up, Abbott Elementary, Yellowstone and The Problem With Jon Stewart were among the productions feted for their work in following green practices and telling stories of environmental justice, climate action and sustainability.

Last night’s Environmental Media Association Awards (EMAs) in Los Angeles, celebrated those who have made an impact in combatting climate change and taken positive steps towards sustaining our planet. One such honoree was Billie Eilish and her mother, Maggie Baird: During the singer’s Happier Than Ever tour, they launched “Overheated,” a climate-focused conference that featured keynote speakers, documentary screenings, and even clothing swaps.

Paris Jackson gave her bohemian style an elegant spin for the 2022 Environmental Media Awards gala. Posing on the red carpet, the “American Horror Story” actress wore a deep brown minidress. Her sleek number featured a chocolate-toned silk minidress with a curved bodice. Completing the piece were long sheer sleeves. Jackson finished her ensemble with a sparkling gold pendant necklace, layered rings and round gold and diamond orbiting drop earrings.

Jordan Peele’s new horror film, Nope, took part in NBCUniversal’s sustainable production program to help lower all emissions across the entire production and make it as efficient as possible. The film integrated environmental best practices into all on-set protocols.

The team wanted to make the film as environmentally sustainable as possible, both behind the scenes and on screen, and that’s just what they did.

These efforts and more earned Nope a Gold Seal from the Environmental Media Association, which recognizes behind the scenes sustainability initiatives.

This fall, the Environmental Media Association will honor mother-daughter duo Maggie Baird and Billie Eilish for their vegan advocacy as it applies to mitigating the climate crisis.

The duo will receive the EMA Missions in Music Award at the Oct. 8 event "for their incredible work as role models for sustainable behaviors.”
