December 2022 Newsletter

We celebrate one more late victory in a year with many wins for the planet. On December 6th, for the first time, EU lawmakers agreed to tell ALL companies selling beef, leather, cocoa, palm oil, soy, coffee, wood, and rubber: If you or your suppliers destroy forests, you can't sell your products in Europe. Many EMA Board Members on the Executive and Activist Boards joined artists such as Coldplay and Jason Momoa in calling for the bill's passage. The letter, signed by more than 80 big names in entertainment, urged, "We need all EU leaders to come together and adopt a strong and ambitious law that protects both forests and the Indigenous and local communities fighting to defend them."

A message from Board Member John Quigley, who spearheaded our efforts,

"This win is an excellent example of how EMA leverages its remarkable community to create real change. The early support from Debbie and the dozens of EMA Board Members who stepped up to support boosted the Artists Open Letter launch to EU leaders. The letter grew to more than 150 signers, including many legendary artists and youth climate activists.

It was a key effort to ensure that the EU Deforestation Law reached the finish line after nearly a decade of negotiations. The law, where products from deforestation are banned from entering the EU, is a truly historic and unprecedented game-changer that will profoundly impact the fate of the Amazon and forests worldwide."

Let's keep the wins coming in 2023!

Since it's the holiday season, and many of us are looking for sustainable dairy options for cookies, cocktails, and more, we want to highlight our partners at Clover Sonoma. The Northern California family farms have significantly reduced their environmental impact this year.

The first PCR Jug from Clover Sonoma

We can't ignore environmental pollution and plastic waste and fossil fuel-based packaging are the main contributors to that pollution. Clover Sonoma launched the first post-consumer recycled (PCR) gallon milk jug, made from 30% PCR content, in the United States this year – and was the first company to use PCR in any milk jug of any percentage. You can find the PCR Jug with all Clover Sonoma Organic Gallon Milk Jugs. Packaging is a big part of their focus as they try to find innovative ways to decrease the use of fossil fuels, utilize less plastic, and encourage recycling. The company commits to increasing the PCR and extending PCR content use across all Clover Sonoma gallon milk jugs by 2025!

Clover Sonoma Organic Moon Milk

In April, Clover Sonoma launched the first organic Moon Milks available nationally at Whole Foods Markets. Available in three flavors – Golden Moon (Turmeric Ginger), Blue Moon (Blueberry Lavender), and Pink Moon (Cherry Berry Hibiscus) – Moon Milks blend 2% organic milk with herbs and soothing botanicals to promote relaxation and wellness -- morning, noon or night. Here are some ways to enjoy Clover's Moon Milks

Seaweed Supplement Trial for Cows

Clover Sonoma and Blue Ocean Barns collaborated on the first ever on-farm use of Brominata, a seaweed-based feed supplement for cows. Adding a small amount of Brominata to cows' diets substantially reduces enteric methane (i.e., methane in cow burps). The Johnson-Neles Dairy, one of Clover Sonoma's family farms, used Brominata for 60 days this summer. During the demo, the cows fed Brominata had over 50% methane reductions while still producing delicious dairy!

It is one of the perfect accompaniments and presents for this date. But, for all that, celebrate Christmas Eve with your loved ones with one of the most outstanding, sustainable red wines of Viña Santa Rita.

Christmas Eve is just around the corner, and there is nothing better than celebrating a family dinner with the best wines or the pleasant surprise on friends' faces when they receive one as a gift. This year, our friends at Viña Santa Rita invite you to discover four Chilean wines during this extraordinary time of the year. A perfect sustainable gift to give to your loved ones, inspired by some of the most emblematic varieties of Chile: Carménère and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Pewën de Apalta

Recently chosen as the “Best Carmenere of Chile” in the renowned South American guide Descorchados 2023, this wine is made from a small block of dry land vineyards in Apalta, considered one of the best wine-producing valleys of Carmenere in Chile.

It is perfect to pair with game birds, seasoned red meats, and mature cheeses during the most awaited celebration of the year.

Triple C

The emblematic blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carmenere from Santa Rita is a daring reinterpretation of the Bordeaux blend but with a unique and local touch. This wine is powerful, elegant, and well-structured from the Maipo Valley, with red and black fruits, tobacco notes, chocolate, and spices.

Enjoy it with a good piece of red or white meat such as turkey or a dish of Italian pasta. Then, pair it with strong cheeses for the typical snack before the big party.

Medalla Real Gold Medal Cabernet Sauvignon

Trajectory and acknowledgment of quality make this Alto Jahuel wine stand out. It has a deep purple ink color, and the nose dominates with dark blue fruit like blueberries, blackberries, dried figs, and some soft spice notes.

It is the ideal companion to dishes prepared with red meals, such as lean beef, lamb, or duck, well-seasoned and cooked on the grill, in stews, or the oven, with various herbs. You can also enjoy it along with mature cheeses and nuts, an excellent option for a Christmas snack.

120 Reserva Especial Cabernet Sauvignon

From the Central Valley terroir comes this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wine with an intense purplish red color, made with red fruit and hints of vanilla and tobacco, perfect for sharing at a Christmas dinner.

It is ideal for serving along with red meat, pork, spicy sauces, and cheese soufflés due to the freshness of its structure.

Drink responsibly and sustainably!
